The finger trick
Hold up ten fingers. For 9 × 4, fold down the fourth finger. Three fingers stand to its left and six to its right: 36. It works for every fact from 9 × 1 to 9 × 10.
The 9 times table looks like one of the harder ones and is secretly one of the easiest. It has more patterns than any other table — a finger trick, a digit rule and a tens rule — and any one of them is enough to rebuild the whole table.
The digits of every answer add up to 9: 18 → 1 + 8 = 9. And the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied by.

For 9 × 7, the tens digit is one less than 7, so 6. The digits must add to 9, so the units digit is 3. Answer: 63.
9 × 6 = (10 × 6) − 6 = 60 − 6 = 54. Fast, reliable, and it keeps working past 9 × 10 where the finger trick stops.
