9 times table

The 9 times table looks like one of the harder ones and is secretly one of the easiest. It has more patterns than any other table — a finger trick, a digit rule and a tens rule — and any one of them is enough to rebuild the whole table.

The digits of every answer add up to 9: 18 → 1 + 8 = 9. And the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied by.

Tricks for the 9 times table

The finger trick

Hold up ten fingers. For 9 × 4, fold down the fourth finger. Three fingers stand to its left and six to its right: 36. It works for every fact from 9 × 1 to 9 × 10.

One less, then make nine

For 9 × 7, the tens digit is one less than 7, so 6. The digits must add to 9, so the units digit is 3. Answer: 63.

Ten lots minus one lot

9 × 6 = (10 × 6) − 6 = 60 − 6 = 54. Fast, reliable, and it keeps working past 9 × 10 where the finger trick stops.

Hold both hands up with ten fingers showing. To work out 9 × 4, bend down the fourth finger from the left. The fingers to the left of the bend are the tens (3) and the fingers to the right are the units (6), giving 36.
Why do the digits of the 9 times table add up to 9?
Because each answer is ten lots minus one lot. Every step up adds 10 and takes away 1, so the tens digit rises by one while the units digit falls by one, and their total stays at 9.
