Getting the most out of a worksheet

  • Time it. Ten questions against a stopwatch beats forty at leisure.
  • Mark it together, straight away. A mistake corrected an hour later has already been learnt wrong.
  • Keep the sheets. Doing the same one again in a fortnight shows real progress far better than a new sheet does.
  • Stop while it is still going well. Ending on a success is what brings a child back tomorrow.

How many questions should a worksheet have?
Twenty to thirty for most primary-age children — enough to be worth doing, short enough to finish while concentration holds. Ten timed questions is often better than fifty untimed.
